Considerations about the stream line resistances of an amphibious vehicle while moving on water

Abstract


When trying to estimate the total power necessary for an amphibious vehicle to move through water at an imposed, maximum speed it is compulsory to have a clear understanding of all forces acting against this. Therefore, this paper will describe the total resistance encountered by an amphibious vehicle while moving through calm, fresh water. To better estimate the effects of the resistance, it is necessary to have a 3D model which replicates the vehicle itself as close as possible. This paper tries to estimate the resistance of a military amphibious vehicle using CFD software while considering a turbulent flow around the 3D model. To properly achieve this goal all the coordinates (x, y, z) of the center of mass had to be determined and also the draft of the amphibious vehicle at equilibrium state while it is fully loaded. The last step was to finely mesh the model and set the boundary conditions for the domain in which all the resistance tests will be carried out. In conclusion, the total resistance, which opposes the forward motion of the vehicle, was determined in order to better estimate the power that the engine has to develop in order to get the vehicle at the maximum imposed speed.
